Phalanx Anti Aircraft Gun - The MK-15 Phalanx CIWS equips US Navy ships. With a deep layer point defense capability against anti-ship missiles, aircraft and littoral warfare threats that penetrate the defenses of other ships. Phalanx automatically detects, assesses, tracks, engages and conducts kill assessments against ASM and high-velocity aircraft threats.
The current variant of Phalanx (Block 1B) adds the ability to counter asymmetric warfare threats by adding integrated and stable electro-optical sensors. These improvements give the Phalanx additional capabilities against small high-speed surface ships, aircraft, helicopters and unmanned aerial systems.

Phalanx is the only close-range weapon system in use that is capable of self-assessment, detection, evaluation, tracking, engagement and self-destruction. Phalanx can also be integrated into existing ship combat control systems to provide additional sensors and fire control support to other mounted ship weapon systems.

Phalanx production began in 1978 in the Block 0 configuration, and was first installed on the USS Coral Sea in 1980. The Block 1 configuration was installed on the USS Wisconsin in 1988. The first Block 1B was installed on the USS Underwood in 1999. The Phalanx program has had an active and ongoing production, enhancement and modification program since 1978.
